Severe Climate Risks Loom Over Asia-Pacific Due to Escalating El Niño and Ongoing Regional Crisis

Recent assessments by various agencies affiliated with the United Nations reveal that the situation in the Asia-Pacific region is increasingly perilous, driven by the intensification of El Niño, changes in the Indian Ocean's conditions, and the lingering regional crisis.

A report published on August 28, 2026, highlights the potential for sharp increases in food, fuel, and fertilizer prices as a direct consequence of these conditions.

Compiled by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), UN Women, and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the report warns that the current El Niño phenomenon could evolve into the most severe weather anomaly on record, with impacts expected to last until 2027.

Analysts project that this alarming situation could thrust an additional 8.2 million people in the region into extreme food insecurity.

Amid these risks, Sri Lanka is categorized as a 'Tier 2' country facing substantial dangers. The report indicates that from October 2026 onwards, the nation is likely to experience more rainfall than usual, coinciding with the second inter-monsoon and northeastern monsoon periods.

This increased precipitation is particularly concerning as it overlaps with the main paddy cultivation season, known as the 'Maha Season,' raising fears that excessive rainfall and flooding could disrupt farming operations and hinder the harvesting of crops.

Furthermore, the ongoing regional crisis has resulted in fuel prices in Sri Lanka staying more than 40% above pre-crisis levels, coupled with soaring costs for fertilizer imports, thereby exacerbating agricultural production expenses.

The report emphasizes that women and girls are likely to be the most vulnerable in this crisis. Rising food prices may force families to limit their meals, while water shortages could necessitate spending longer periods fetching water, potentially leading to increased domestic violence due to the resulting economic pressures.

To mitigate potential damages, the United Nations calls for urgent preparedness and proactive measures at the national level. It also urges regional governments to maintain constant vigilance regarding climate forecasts and to establish structured approaches for managing agricultural practices effectively.
