Fuel Shortages Create Crisis for Sri Lankan Filling Stations Amidst Strict Supply Limits

A significant crisis in the fuel retail sector has emerged in Sri Lanka due to the stringent limitations on diesel allocations from foreign companies. Kumar Rajapaksha, the chairman of the association representing filling station owners, has called for immediate intervention from the President to resolve the escalating situation.

During a media briefing, Rajapaksha highlighted that three foreign fuel companies—R.M. Pax, Sinopec, and LIOC—have restricted fuel supplies to filling stations for approximately the past ten days.

These companies have indicated that they are incurring significant losses due to the vast discrepancy between the international market prices and the retail prices set by the government.

As a result of the assurance provided upon their arrival in the country, which promises assistance to offset losses, these companies have opted to limit supply since no financial assistance has been made available to mitigate their losses.

The ongoing crisis has particularly affected residents in the Northern and Eastern provinces, according to Rajapaksha. He noted that the limited number of filling stations affiliated with the Lanka Mineral Oil Company in those regions has forced many private filling stations to shut down.

Each filling station typically employs between 15 to 20 workers, and the lack of income has left owners unable to pay salaries or service bank loans taken for station renovations, thereby plunging them into severe financial distress.

Rajapaksha urged the government to act swiftly to address the current predicament, providing solutions that would alleviate the difficulties faced by both consumers and filling station owners alike.
