Notorious Elephant Poacher Arrested in Sri Lanka with Firearms

The main suspect believed to be behind the shooting of 'Kavinthissa', Sri Lanka's largest and tallest elephant, has been apprehended by authorities, who confirmed the capture alongside two firearms.

A coordinated special operation by the police and officials from the Department of Wildlife Conservation focused on the regions of Meegalayawa and Galgamuwa proved successful in locating the suspect.

At the time of arrest, law enforcement seized two illegal firearms from the suspect, who has been operating in the area under the guise of protecting agricultural lands while shooting wildlife.

Investigations are underway to determine the full extent of the suspect's activities, including whether he has been involved in poaching for a prolonged period.

‘Kavinthissa’, a majestic elephant measuring over ten feet tall, is a prominent inhabitant of the forests in the Galgamuwa, Raswehera, Meegalayawa, and Kalawewa areas, which fall within the region known for its wildlife.

Recent reports indicated that this iconic elephant had sustained severe injuries from gunfire, sparking widespread outrage among animal lovers and the general public across the nation.

The Meegalayawa and Galgamuwa regions are notorious for human-elephant conflicts and rampant poaching activities, previously highlighted by the infamous killing of the well-known elephant named Galgamuwa Puthuwa.

According to the Wildlife and Forest Conservation Act, injuring or killing an elephant is a serious crime that comes with substantial penalties, including lengthy prison sentences and hefty fines, ensuring offenders face strict legal repercussions.

The arrested individual is scheduled to be presented before the court shortly.
