හිටපු ජනාධිපති රනිල් වික්‍රමසිංහ මහතා පසුගිය සැප්තැම්බර් 30 වැනිදා කොළඹ කොටුව මහේස්ත්‍රාත් අධිකරණයෙන් පිටව ගිය අවස්ථාවේදී, ඔහුගේ ආරක්ෂක කණ්ඩායමේ නිලධාරියෙකු සහ මාධ්‍ය ආයතනයක් නියෝජනය කළ කැමරා ශිල්පියෙකු අතර මෙම ආන්දෝලනාත්මක සිදුවීම වාර්තා වී තිබිණි.

පහරකෑමට ලක්වූ බව කියන අදාළ ආරක්ෂක නිලධාරියා කොළඹ ජාතික රෝහලට ඇතුළත් වී ඇති අතර, සිද්ධිය සම්බන්ධයෙන් ඔහු විසින් කොම්පඤ්ඤවීදිය පොලිසිය වෙත පැමිණිල්ලක් ද ඉදිරිපත් කර ඇත.

අනතුරුව අදාළ සිදුවීමට අදාළව ප්‍රකාශයක් ලබාගැනීම සඳහා කොම්පඤ්ඤවීදිය පොලිස් ස්ථානයට කැඳවූ එම මාධ්‍යවේදියා අත්අඩංගුවට ගත් බව පොලිස් මාධ්‍ය ප්‍රකාශකවරයා තහවුරු කළ බව ද එම නිවේදනයේ දැක්වේ.

ප්‍රභූ ආරක්ෂක නිලධාරීන්ට යම් පුද්ගලයෙකුගේ හෝ ස්ථානයක ආරක්ෂාව තහවුරු කිරීමේ රාජකාරිමය වගකීමක් හිමිව ඇති සේම, ජනතාවගේ තොරතුරු දැනගැනීමේ අයිතිය සුරක්ෂිත කිරීම වෙනුවෙන් මාධ්‍යවේදීන්ට ද සුවිශේෂී කාර්යභාරයක් පැවරී ඇති බව නිදහස් මාධ්‍ය ව්‍යාපාරය පෙන්වා දෙයි.

එබැවින් දෙපාර්ශ්වයම අන්‍යෝන්‍ය අවබෝධයෙන් හා එකිනෙකාගේ වෘත්තීය ගරුත්වය රැකෙන පරිදි කටයුතු කිරීම අත්‍යවශ්‍ය කරුණක් බව ද එහි සඳහන් වේ.

Call for Impartial Investigation into Altercation Involving Former President's Security Officer

The Free Media Movement has urged authorities to conduct an unbiased, prompt, and thorough inquiry into an incident involving a security officer of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe and a media cameraman. The appeal was made in a media statement signed by the movement’s coordinator and secretary, Dilisha Abeysundara.

This disturbing incident reportedly occurred on September 30 as Wickremesinghe left the Colombo Kotuwa Magistrate’s Court. Conflicting accounts detail a confrontation involving a member of his security detail and a cameraman representing a media institution.

The security officer, who allegedly suffered injuries, has been admitted to the National Hospital in Colombo. He has since filed a complaint with the Kompannaweediya police regarding the incident.

In a twist, that same police station later detained the cameraman who was summoned to provide a statement relating to the event, as confirmed by a police media spokesperson in the statement.

The Free Media Movement emphasized that while security officers have the crucial responsibility of ensuring the safety of individuals and locations, journalists also bear a significant duty to secure the public's right to information. Therefore, it is critical for both parties to engage collaboratively while respecting each other’s professional integrity.

Highlighting the serious implications of such incidents, the organization noted that accusations directed at media personnel cannot be taken lightly, especially given the professional backgrounds of those involved, which has drawn considerable societal attention to the matter.

The movement has reiterated its call for authorities to ensure the swift revelation of factual details and to implement fair and urgent investigative procedures in response to the incident.
