දැනට රාජ්ය අංශයේ පවතින සමස්ත පුරප්පාඩු සංඛ්යාව 120,000ක් පමණ වන අතර, පොලිස් දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ පමණක් පුරප්පාඩු 40,000ක් පවතී. මේ හේතුවෙන් පොලිස් නිලධාරීන්ට ද මුලින් වසර දෙකක සේවා දිගුවක් ලබාදීමට රජය සැලසුම් කර ඇත.

Government Extends Service Tenure for Senior Medical and Technical Professionals
In a significant move to address the shortage of medical and technical professionals in the public sector, the government has decided to grant an extension of two years to senior officials, as reported by the Sunday Times.
This decision stems from the relative lack of new recruits to replace those retiring from service. Officials will now have the opportunity to prolong their service if they choose to do so.
According to a senior government official, this extension particularly applies to medical specialists, professionals engaged in scientific services, and other specialized fields.
The extension is not mandatory; rather, officials wishing to continue their tenure can apply for it. The report highlights a significant shortage of applicants in specific technical fields, which has led to delays in essential tasks within vital institutions such as the Department of Government Analysts.
When applications were requested to fill 100 vacancies in the Department of Government Analysts, only about 70 applications were submitted.
Currently, the total number of vacancies in the public sector stands at approximately 120,000, with around 40,000 of those within the police department alone. Consequently, the government plans to extend service tenures for police officers as well.
Additionally, attention is being directed towards increasing the retirement age for judges of the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal, a proposal that has already sparked opposition and intense discussions from various stakeholders, as further noted by the Sunday Times.
