 ලෝක ප්‍රකට නුවරඑළිය ඓතිහාසික තැපැල් කාර්යාල ගොඩනැගිල්ලේ උඩු මහල විදේශීය සංචාරකයින් සඳහා පහසුකම් සහිත නැවතුම්පොළක් ලෙස සංවර්ධනය කිරීමේ කටයුතු මේ වන විට ආරම්භ කර තිබේ.

තැපැල් දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව සතු සම්පත් උපරිම ලෙස ප්‍රයෝජනයට ගනිමින් දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ ආදායම් මාර්ග පුළුල් කිරීමේ අරමුණින් මෙම ව්‍යාපෘතිය ක්‍රියාත්මක වේ.

මෙහිදී ගොඩනැගිල්ලේ පෞරාණික වාස්තු විද්‍යාත්මක වටිනාකමට කිසිදු හානියක් නොවන පරිදි, එහි අභ්‍යන්තරය නවීන සංචාරක අවශ්‍යතාවලට ගැලපෙන සේ සකස් කිරීමට නියමිතය.

මීට පෙර මෙම ඓතිහාසික ගොඩනැගිල්ල හෝටල් ව්‍යාපෘතියක් සඳහා පෞද්ගලික අංශයට පැවරීමට රජය ගත් උත්සාහයත් සමඟ රට තුළ දැඩි ආන්දෝලනාත්මක තත්ත්වයක් නිර්මාණය විය.

විශේෂයෙන්ම තැපැල් වෘත්තීය සමිති, සිවිල් සංවිධාන සහ ප්‍රදේශවාසීන් ඊට එරෙහිව දැවැන්ත විරෝධතා ව්‍යාපාර දියත් කළහ. ඔවුන් පෙන්වා දුන්නේ ජාතික උරුමයක් බඳු මෙවැනි ස්ථානයක් පෞද්ගලික අංශයට පැවරීම නොකළ යුතු බවයි.

නුවරඑළිය නගර මධ්‍යයේ පිහිටි මෙම තැපැල් කාර්යාලය මෙරට පවතින පැරණිතම තැපැල් කාර්යාලවලින් එකකි. 1894 වසරේදී බ්‍රිතාන්‍යයන් විසින් ඉදිකරන ලද මෙම ගොඩනැගිල්ල 'ටියුඩර්'  වාස්තු විද්‍යාත්මක ශෛලියට අනුව රතු ගඩොලින් නිමවා ඇත.

වසර 130ක අභිමානවත් ඉතිහාසයකට හිමිකම් කියන මෙම මන්දිරය, දෙස් විදෙස් සංචාරකයින් නුවරඑළියේදී වැඩි වශයෙන් ඡායාරූප ලබා ගන්නා ස්ථානයක් ලෙසද ප්‍රසිද්ධියක් උසුලයි.

Renovation of Historic Nuwara Eliya Post Office to Boost Tourism

Efforts are now underway to develop the upper floor of the historic Nuwara Eliya Post Office building into a facility for international tourists. This initiative marks a significant step in enhancing the tourism experience in this well-known city.

Driven by the objective of maximizing the resources of the Department of Posts and broadening its revenue streams, the project is set to elevate the monument's utility while preserving its historical integrity.

Plans are in place to renovate the building's interior in a manner that reflects modern tourism needs, ensuring that its architectural value remains intact. The project aims to offer tourists a unique glimpse into the architectural heritage of the area.

Previously, a government effort to hand over this historic structure to the private sector for a hotel project sparked significant unrest across the country. This initiative faced massive protests, particularly from postal trade unions, civil organizations, and local residents, who strongly opposed the privatization of such a nationally significant site.

Located in the heart of Nuwara Eliya, this post office is one of the oldest in Sri Lanka. Constructed by the British in 1894, it showcases the Tudor architectural style, marked by its distinctive red bricks.

This illustrious building, with a proud history spanning over 130 years, has also gained fame as a picturesque spot for both domestic and foreign tourists looking to capture memorable photographs against its iconic backdrop.
