Lanka Imposes 50% Import Tax on Motor Vehicles

The Sri Lankan government has announced a significant increase in import taxes on motor vehicles, imposing a 50% surcharge. This decision was revealed by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who serves as the Minister of Finance, Economic Development, and Production.

According to the new customs regulation, effective from August 15, 2026, through December 31, 2026, an amendment has been made under subsection 10A of the Customs Ordinance No. 83 of 1988.

During this period, the additional surcharge will be applied to the already existing standard import duties and levies imposed on imported vehicles.

However, vehicles for which credit agreements were initiated on or before May 15, 2026, will be exempt from this surcharge, as clearly stated in the customs announcement.

Despite this exemption, should the vehicles be shipped after November 15, 2026, they will be subject to the 50% surcharge, irrespective of when the credit arrangement was established, government officials have emphasized.

Furthermore, the announcement specifies that minor modifications to vehicle identification numbers, engine numbers, or technical specifications will still qualify for the tax relief, provided they comply with the stipulated timelines.
