Sri Lanka and India to Establish Joint Task Force for Free Trade Agreement Revamp

In a significant move to revitalize the existing Free Trade Agreement, Sri Lanka and India have agreed to form a joint task force comprised of representatives from both nations. This decision emerged during the official visit of Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri to Sri Lanka, as reported by the Sunday Times.

Foreign Minister Wijitha Herath emphasized that the task force's objective will be to assess current trade agreements, ensuring that both countries derive maximum benefits from these arrangements. The selection of members for this operational team is set to take place in the near future.

During his visit, Misri held discussions with key figures including President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, and Foreign Minister Herath. Reports indicate that the Indian side has urged for expeditious progress on several ongoing Indian projects in Sri Lanka, which have faced delays for various reasons.

Particularly, focus was drawn to several crucial projects such as the interconnection of power systems between the two countries, the Sampur solar power project, and the development of the Trincomalee power generation hub. These initiatives are seen as pivotal for enhancing collaboration in the energy sector.

Additionally, both parties have agreed to expedite the tender process for the Sri Lanka Digital Identity project, aiming for prompt implementation.

Dialogue surrounding the Kankasanturai Port's rehabilitation and modernization project, funded by an Indian grant of $61.5 million, also made significant progress with the intent to finalize a memorandum of understanding swiftly.

Further discussions were directed towards supplying medical equipment to the Deniyaya hospital and providing essential resources to educational institutions across the island, highlighting the ongoing commitment to bolster collaboration in healthcare and education.

The successful completion of discussions regarding a social security agreement between the two nations has been confirmed, with plans for signing once the necessary internal procedures are finalized, as stated by the Indian High Commission in Colombo.

Minister Herath also noted that Sri Lanka intends to review its trade agreements with other countries in the near future, further underscoring the importance of strategic economic partnerships.
