SriLankan Airlines Reports Record Loss of Rs. 7.59 Billion for 2024/25 Fiscal Year
SriLankan Airlines has disclosed a staggering net loss of Rs. 7.59 billion (approximately Rs. 7,594.56 million) for the 2024/25 financial year, as highlighted in the company’s latest annual report.
Last fiscal year (2023/24), the airline had recorded a net profit of Rs. 3.87 billion, marking a dramatic turnaround in its financial performance as the company faces significant challenges this year. The total group loss, including its subsidiaries, stands at Rs. 2.73 billion (Rs. 2,735.28 million).
This latest loss has pushed the accumulated losses of SriLankan Airlines to Rs. 616.30 billion (Rs. 616,306 million), while the group's total accumulated losses have reached Rs. 596.46 billion. As of March 31, 2025, the airline's current liabilities exceed its current assets by Rs. 368.29 billion, alongside a total equity position reflecting a deficit of Rs. 403.17 billion. These alarming figures point to severe uncertainty regarding the airline's future, heightened by the company's lack of financial support from the government, as emphasized by the chief auditor in the report.
The airline's revenue has also taken a hit, decreasing by 11% from Rs. 333.61 billion to Rs. 296.50 billion compared to the previous year. This decline is particularly notable considering a significant increase in tourist arrivals to the country; yet passenger numbers served by SriLankan Airlines fell by 4% to 3,466,050.
Operational limitations have arisen from engine failures, shortages of spare parts, and maintenance delays, resulting in the cancellation of 487 flights during the year. Additionally, the airline's market share at Bandaranaike International Airport has dropped to 40%.
The geopolitical turmoil in the Middle East has necessitated changes to flight routes, leading to increased fuel costs and flight durations. Alterations to flight schedules at major airports like London Heathrow have caused operational disruptions, leading to missed flight connections and the need to offload passengers.
The financial burden on the airline continues to escalate, with interest-bearing loans and outstanding obligations costing a staggering Rs. 31.59 billion in net financial expenses. Emergency repairs on leased A320/321 Neo engines required an allocation of Rs. 2.22 billion, while a provision of Rs. 13.45 billion has been set aside for penalties and outstanding payments resulting from a contract breach with Rolls Royce regarding the A350 aircraft.
The current total liabilities of the airline amount to Rs. 585.14 billion, which includes Rs. 91.31 billion in domestic state bank loans and Rs. 62.67 billion (approximately USD 175 million) in overdue international bonds. As part of a government debt restructuring initiative, the Treasury has agreed to intervene to facilitate repayment of the domestic loans, while the company has taken legal measures to obtain an injunction against bondholders attempting to seize control.
Furthermore, the recruitment of experienced engineers and technicians for Middle Eastern airlines has intensified competition, contributing to a 7% increase in employee costs, presenting substantial challenges to the airline's operational effectiveness, according to the annual report.
