Iran Warns of Possible Expansion of Conflict to Indian Ocean Amid Ongoing Middle Eastern Tensions

The Iranian regime has issued a stark warning that the current Middle Eastern conflicts could potentially spread to the Indian Ocean region, heightening concerns for India, which relies heavily on this area for energy supply and maritime trade.

Yahya Rahim Safavi, a senior advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, stated that if the United States or Israel continues to conduct attacks, Tehran would take steps to widen the conflict.

In a video released by Iran's FARS news agency, Safavi highlighted that the conflict has already extended from the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz to the Red Sea. He suggested that in response to any further military actions, the situation might escalate to include the Indian Ocean and possibly even beyond.

Recent developments show that coalition forces in Yemen have secured control over areas along the Red Sea coastline, intensifying their grip on the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a strategic passageway for maritime routes to Asia and Europe. Although Iran has provided military support to these coalition forces for an extended period, it denies any direct involvement in the Yemeni conflict.

Following U.S.-Israeli airstrikes in late February, Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, an area crucial for global oil and gas transportation. This region remains a battleground between America and Iran, with fierce competition over its control continuing to escalate.

While Iranian officials have previously warned that renewed U.S. attacks would broaden the conflict's geographic scope, this statement marks the first time an advisor to the Supreme Leader has directly referenced the Indian Ocean, highlighting the strategic U.S.-British military base known as Diego Garcia, which is approximately 4,000 kilometers from Iran.

In an attempt to seek a peaceful resolution, officials from both countries have reportedly engaged in discussions alongside the United Nations General Assembly this week in New York. Iran has outlined several conditions for ending the conflict, focusing on the removal of sanctions impacting its economy and the unrestricted release of frozen assets held by foreign nations. During a special interview with a French news agency, Hossein Mohammadi, a spokesperson for Iran's Revolutionary Guard, indicated that the cessation of the Yemeni war is included in these discussions.

Should the conflict reach the Indian Ocean, it could disrupt maritime activity significantly, bringing India closer to the turmoil, thereby impacting commercial sea routes that connect India with the Middle East, Europe, and Africa.

Considering that a substantial portion of India's oil imports comes from the Middle East, any threat to maritime navigation through the Persian Gulf or the Strait of Hormuz poses a real risk of escalating oil prices, transportation costs, and marine insurance premiums.

In light of the deteriorating conditions in the Red Sea, several shipping companies have already altered their routes to ensure safety, resulting in increased transit times and costs. Economic analysts underscore that expanding conflict to the east could pressure both Indian exporters and importers significantly.

Moreover, this situation may prompt an expansion of the Indian Navy's security responsibilities, which has previously been involved in protecting commercial shipping and addressing maritime threats. However, reports indicate that Safavi's comments did not specify whether the focus would be on commercial vessels, military targets, or particular nations in the region.
