Surging Fuel Prices Threaten Global Shipping Costs Amid Geopolitical Tensions

The rapidly escalating conflict in the Middle East is driving up fuel prices for maritime operations, raising alarms about a possible spike in international shipping costs. A report prepared by journalist Vimukthi S. Rudrigo highlights the growing concerns in the industry.

Ongoing tensions, particularly the U.S.-Iran conflict and the Houthi-Saudi disputes, have led to an alarming rise in global maritime fuel expenditure, costing an additional €340 million daily.

Notably, the price of very-low-sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO), predominantly used in Singapore's shipping sector, has skyrocketed to over 60% above pre-conflict price levels.

Obstacles to fuel transportation through the Strait of Hormuz, coupled with heightened security risks in the eastern Mediterranean maritime zone, have contributed to soaring operational costs for vessels. This situation is directly impacting global trade and shipping fees.

Furthermore, Sri Lanka, strategically located along key international shipping routes, is feeling the repercussions of these developments. Increased risks associated with the Red Sea have prompted vessels to alter their routes, resulting in a surge in the number of ships passing through Colombo port and a heightened demand for fuel supplies in the region, as confirmed by data from S&P Global.
