Severe 'Super El Niño' Could Lead to 450,000 Additional Deaths Globally, Warns Study
A new study reported by RT News reveals a chilling prediction: the ongoing, powerful 'Super El Niño' weather phenomenon could result in over 450,000 deaths worldwide due to extreme heat-related conditions. This occurrence may soon be recognized as one of the most severe climatic events in recorded history.
Researchers caution that the brunt of the impact will likely fall on developing nations, compounding existing vulnerabilities. The findings, published by the Climate Impact Lab—a coalition of prominent international research institutions, including the University of Chicago—estimate that between 2026 and 2027, this El Niño event may lead to nearly half a million additional fatalities worldwide.
The forecasts indicate that countries in the global south will experience the highest levels of distress, with Africa’s Sahel region alone projected to witness around 66,800 deaths in the next six months. Nigeria and Sudan are anticipated to report 31,400 and 17,500 deaths, respectively, caused by the extreme temperatures. Other nations such as Indonesia, India, and Brazil are also expected to face significant heat-related fatalities, with estimates of 19,300, 15,800, and 13,300 deaths, respectively. Furthermore, the United States may see around 3,500 additional deaths attributed to extreme heat from September to February.
Commenting on the findings, Michael Greenstone, co-founder of the Climate Impact Lab and a professor at the University of Chicago, emphasized that these statistics represent far more than mere numbers; they embody the lives of parents, children, the elderly, and neighbors living among us.
According to data from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service, August marked the hottest month in recorded history, with global average temperatures reaching 16.96 degrees Celsius, surpassing previous records. Western Europe, in particular, has experienced one of its hottest summers to date. Researchers warn that as the planet continues to warm, events of this extreme nature are likely to become more common in the coming decades due to the ongoing influence of this El Niño phenomenon.
