Flour Price Hike Looms Over Sri Lanka Amid Rising Costs and Import Challenges
The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has sought approval to increase the price of essential flour by Rs. 20 per kilogram. However, a senior official from a local company importing flour has revealed that the government has only sanctioned a smaller increase of Rs. 13.
Flour is currently imported from Canada, Australia, and Russia, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, alongside a shortage of flour grains, escalating shipping costs, and the rising value of the dollar, are purported to be contributing factors that have prompted the request for a price hike. The official emphasized that these challenges have consistently hindered the production of flour.
At present, the retail price for bread made with flour stands at Rs. 220 per kilogram. The official noted that increasing flour prices would directly affect the market, causing a decrease in sales for their company.
Cane farmers expressed their concerns, stating that the rising price of flour has adversely impacted their income. Many report consuming flour-based foods at least twice a day.
Restaurant owners have voiced worries that an increase in flour prices will inevitably lead to higher costs for quick meals, which could dampen business. Bakers, dealing with rising prices for bread and other flour-derived products, confirmed that their operations have also suffered as a result.
In light of these developments, the economy faces a challenging period ahead as consumers and businesses grapple with soaring flour costs.
