Authority Launches Nationwide Raids Against Unapproved Flour Price Hikes
The Chairperson of the Consumer Affairs Authority, Hemanta Samarakoon, has announced the immediate initiation of special raids across the country to address unauthorized price increases in the flour sector. This action comes following reports that the price of flour has surged by Rs. 13 per kilogram without prior notification or any consensus.
In response to media reports highlighting this price escalation, the Authority has formally reached out to local flour production companies both in writing and via email to investigate the circumstances surrounding the increase.
The directive issued by the Authority requests these companies to clarify whether a price adjustment has indeed taken place, the particulars of such an increase, and the reason for failing to notify the Consumer Affairs Authority beforehand.
Samarakoon emphasized that once they review the clarifications provided by the companies, they will not hesitate to take any necessary legal actions.
While there is currently no fixed price control on flour, he noted that instances of sellers marketing the product at elevated rates, surpassing previous prices, will be confronted. The raids aim to ensure consumers are not placed at a disadvantage due to exploitative pricing practices.
