Allegations of Corruption Filed Against Excise Commissioner General
A complaint has been lodged with the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption against the Excise Commissioner General, linked to the alleged use of a luxury vehicle obtained through bribery from an alcohol production company. The filing was made by social activist Kalum Amarasinghe, who subsequently shared details with the media.
During his statement, Amarasinghe asserted that a modern Honda vessel, with the registration number 'CBQ 2879', is currently being used by the Excise Commissioner General's university student son, allegedly provided by a liquor company regulated under the Excise Department.
He emphasized that if the vehicle was acquired through the Commissioner General's personal wealth or legitimate income sources, it should have been disclosed in his asset declaration before assuming office. This, he pointed out, is a requisite for transparency.
Failing this, Amarasinghe noted that there arises justifiable suspicion that the vehicle was received as a bribe, particularly in light of social media revelations regarding the matter.
He mentioned that responsible government ministers often speak about corruption on various television programs and call on the Bribery Commission or the Criminal Investigation Department to file complaints. Acting on this, he has taken the initiative to file his complaint as a conscientious citizen. Amarasinghe also revealed that since the current government came to power, he has submitted between 10 to 20 complaints about significant corruption issues to the relevant investigative agencies.
Given the serious implications of these allegations involving a senior public official still in service, Amarasinghe urged the Bribery Commission to prioritize the investigation and commence it without delay.
