Major Cybersecurity Breach Threatens SriLankan Airlines
The entire computer and digital operations system of SriLankan Airlines has fallen under the control of an international hacker group, raising serious concerns about a potential disaster for the national airline, Parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekara revealed during a recent parliamentary session.
Jayasekara highlighted that the notorious hacker collective known as 'Blacknet' had completely hijacked the airline's systems on June 28 and 29. He confirmed that the hackers also released a video through the Dark Web, substantiating their attack.
In exchange for restoring access to the system, the hackers demanded a ransom of $50,000 in Bitcoin, an amount exceeding 1.5 crore Sri Lankan Rupees.
All electronic mail systems for the airline's employees are reportedly compromised, with the previously existing email security measures abruptly deactivated, he noted.
“Today, it's impossible to have any trust in the operations of SriLankan Airlines. The hackers control everything. At any moment, they could disrupt our airline operations completely. This constitutes a significant national crisis,” Jayasekara emphasized.
He further alleged that efforts by officials to initiate an investigation into this serious cyber incident have been impeded, with the Presidential Secretary's office attempting to downplay the situation.
While American security consultants based in Singapore have expressed willingness to assist in restoring the airline's cyber systems to their original state, Jayasekara remarked that Sri Lankan authorities have still yet to act on this offer, raising suspicions about their responsiveness.
