Suspects Arrested in Shooting Incident Involving 'Kawantissa' Elephant Face Court Scrutiny
Concerns were raised in the Mahawa Magistrate's Court regarding the evidence against two individuals arrested in connection with the shooting incident involving the 'Kawantissa' elephant. The magistrate questioned wildlife officials about the concrete evidence they could present linking the suspects to the crime.
Following their arrest by the Panadura Central Anti-Corruption Strike Force, the suspects were remanded to custody by Magistrate Anuradha Senevirathna until August 28. Two separate cases have been filed against the suspects by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, with the first proceeding focused on Lakmal Padmasiri.
Wildlife officials testified that the suspect possessed a legally registered firearm and was suspected of violating the conditions of the registration, thus raising alarms about his potential involvement in shooting at the elephant.
Defending Lakmal, attorney Uday Rajapaksha countered that the allegations were unfounded, claiming that the complaints lacked a solid basis. He noted that the chaotic atmosphere in the area following the shooting led the anti-corruption unit to detain six individuals carrying firearms, three of whom were later released, casting doubt on the validity of the operation.
Rajapaksha insisted that his client had not breached any licensing conditions, stressing that the wildlife officials had acted solely on suspicion without any scientific or ballistic examination linking him to the shooting. The prosecution's argument fell short of establishing a clear connection between the suspect and the crime.
The second suspect, Shanta Dharmasiri Ratnayake, was also referred to by legal representatives, who highlighted his experience as a public servant with two decades at the local government office. Although he possessed a registered firearm for protection of his agricultural land, it had never been used for any illegal activity.
After hearing arguments from both sides, Magistrate Senevirathna inquired about the supporting evidence that could confirm that the shooting was carried out with the suspect's firearm, which the wildlife officials failed to provide satisfactorily.
The magistrate underscored the importance of ensuring that the suspects remain in custody, stating that they could not be released under these circumstances. The court ordered the prosecution to submit a detailed report by August 28, including specific dates, scientific data, and testimonies from eyewitnesses regarding the shooting incident involving the elephant.
Meanwhile, the wife of the main suspect expressed her belief that her husband had no connection to the shooting. She said, “Officials pressured my husband to admit to something he didn’t do. My husband, who is also a government servant, and I have two children. Our family is now in a situation where we cannot face society. My husband legally possesses a firearm and renewed his registration this year. We request an unbiased investigation to ensure justice prevails.”
