Former President Rajapaksa's Secretary Arrested Over Large Sum of Money

Sanjaya Samarasinghe, who previously served as a coordinator for former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, was taken into custody by police after investigators discovered an astonishing sum exceeding 1.8 million Sri Lankan Rupees (approximately $5,500) concealed at his residence. Authorities are probing the origins of the funds, which Samarasinghe has thus far failed to account for.

The money was uncovered during a search of his home mandated by law enforcement officials. It was found hidden inside a safe, leading to suspicions regarding its legality.

Reports indicate that Samarasinghe could not satisfactorily declare the legal sources or income that generated this substantial amount, prompting his arrest under laws regarding money laundering and the investigation of illicit assets.

The arrest is part of a broader initiative targeting suspected illicit assets linked to political figures and their staff, with multiple inquiries underway in recent months. This operation correlates with an extensive investigation conducted by relevant authorities following claims of corruption.

On the 16th of this month, a joint operation involving the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption and various police units led to the raid on Samarasinghe's residence in Gal Kirillawala.

During this coordinated effort, officials managed to seize the safe. However, an attorney representing the case noted that the police or the bribery commission had not yet provided additional official details regarding the motives behind the raid or further related information, promising updates later today.
