Police Intervene as Teachers Conduct Outdoor Classes Amid Adverse Weather

In light of the severe adverse weather currently affecting the island, the government announced a closure of schools to ensure the safety of students and teachers on the 27th. However, a teacher at a primary school in the town of Kotagala defied this directive by conducting outdoor classes for students on the same day.

Utilizing WhatsApp, the teacher communicated with parents to invite a group of children to partake in the outdoor lesson. Local authorities were alerted to this situation, prompting the officer-in-charge of the Dimbula Police Station, Inspector Nilantha Ambeweera, to visit the site. He emphasized that given the prevailing weather conditions, holding such outdoor classes was improper. Consequently, he took action to send the children back home for their safety.

The teacher and his colleague were subsequently advised by the officer, who allowed both educators to leave without further action.

Residents reported that similar events were occurring in other towns, including Hatton and Maskeliya, where some teachers conducted outdoor classes despite the weather warnings on the 27th.
