Government Marks Significant Success in Facilitating Muslim Pilgrimage with New Legislation
The Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, Hiniduma Sunil Senewi, has proclaimed a monumental achievement with the recent enactment of legislation aimed at facilitating the Muslim community's Hajj pilgrimage. This announcement was made during an interfaith dialogue titled “Manudham Punaruwa Samvadaya,” which gathered various religious leaders on October 16 at a tea factory premises in Giragama.
During the gathering, Senewi emphasized the government's commitment to easing the process of undertaking the Hajj pilgrimage. Discussions are reportedly ongoing with travel agencies to negotiate a reduction in pilgrimage costs while seeking to increase the number of faithful participating annually in the Hajj. These efforts include ongoing talks with the Saudi government to enhance the experience for Sri Lankan pilgrims.
He also highlighted the acknowledgment of the Sabarimala pilgrimage in Kerala, India, as a national pilgrimage after a gap of fifty years, with the government officially recognizing it through a gazette. This recognition came as a result of the Hindu community's participation in worshiping the Idappan deity at Sabarimala.
The interfaith event saw participation from a wide array of religious leaders, including Sujata Hamud, Leslie Darijuh from the Pilimathalawa Devadharma Sasthralaya, and Maulavi Thumah from the Dawlagala Madiya Nagoda church. Key figures also present included Deputy Health Minister Hansaka Wijemuni, and several members of Parliament for the Kandy District including E.M. Basnayake and Riyas Paruk, as well as local leaders from the Yatinuwara region.
Reporting from Yatinuwara, Mahendra Randeniya.
