Chief Monk Urges Public and Government to Focus on Substance over Style in Recent Controversy
The recent events surrounding Venerable Gnanasara Thero have prompted calls for a deeper examination of his words rather than merely focusing on their delivery. Professor Induragare Dhammarathana Thero stressed the importance of both the public and the government recognizing and responding sensitively to the issues raised.
During a special media briefing, he emphasized that the true meaning behind any statement should be sought instead of fixating solely on surface matters, likening it to the proverbial act of looking at the finger rather than the moon it points towards.
He warned against dismissing statements based solely on the individual they come from, recalling moments when revered leaders like the late Madihe Pannasiha Thero spoke on national issues with profound clarity, yet societal reactions were inadequate at the time.
Shifting the focus from the tone of voice to the underlying national concerns is essential, Dhammarathana Thero remarked. This need for focus has resonated with various Buddhist organizations and leading monks, who have begun issuing statements regarding the incident, indicating a readiness to pursue legal actions if necessary.
He expressed confidence that the government would pay attention to the letters circulated by the Chief Prelates, highlighting that there is a growing concern over targeted harassment through fake accounts on social media, directed at him personally. He noted that some individuals are promoting narratives of violence against him, stating, "Next, they might attempt to incite violence against Dhammarathana Thero."
In a spirit of compassion, he mentioned his desire to respond with leniency towards those spreading defamation and disinformation, urging them not to disrupt their livelihoods.
Lastly, he called on the public to engage in nationwide Bodhi poojas to invoke blessings, encouraging both the general populace and national organizations to take a deeper, empathetic approach to understanding the issues at hand, instead of merely observing the surface of the controversy.
This media event was attended by a group that included Venerable Anandakiththi, the head of the Department of Language Studies at the University of Kelaniya, among others.
