Russia Launches Significant Attack on Ukraine's Dnipro River 'Pivdenny' Bridge
The strategic 'Pivdenny' bridge over the Dnipro River has become the latest target of intense bombardment by Russian forces, marking the fourth consecutive day of strikes aimed at critical infrastructure in the Ukrainian capital. This attack also represents the second day strikes have been directed at this vital northern crossing.
Footage circulating online captures the moment of the assault, as vehicles were visibly traversing the bridge when a powerful explosion erupted, sending a massive fireball and thick clouds of black smoke into the sky, as reported by the BBC.
Ukrainian officials described the incident as a drone strike targeting the bridge's surface, while independent intelligence sources credited the assault to Russia’s use of the 'S8000 Banderol' cruise missile, which has been deployed since 2025 and operates at speeds of around 650 kilometers per hour, affecting a range of approximately 500 kilometers.
According to the city's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, two individuals sustained injuries from the attack, one of whom required hospitalization while the other received first aid at the scene. The blast also caused damage to the central heating pipeline system in the city, disrupting hot water supplies to several districts of Desnianskyi. Public transport routes were diverted as a result, severely affecting vehicular movement.
Notably, a previous strike on the bridge last Saturday injured two civilians, causing damage to a trolleybus electrical line. Earlier in the week, Russian forces targeted the 'Pivdenny' bridge in the south, with Ukrainian military sources indicating that these routes are crucial for their operational logistics, prompting warnings of escalated attacks in areas surrounding Kyiv.
In the past week alone, Russia has launched over 1,900 drone assaults, 1,700 aerial bombs, and 25 missiles against Ukraine, with more than 800 of the drones being jet-powered. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the gravity of this ongoing campaign against civilian infrastructure.
This attack comes amid a surprise visit to Ukraine by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who reaffirmed his country’s commitment to support Ukraine with air defense assistance. Despite continuous assaults, reports indicate that the primary bridges in the capital remain intact, averting complete destruction thus far.
