Allegations of Political Appointment in Auditor General's Office Raised in Parliament

Concerns have emerged regarding the government’s attempts to politically appoint an outsider to the prestigious position of Auditor General, despite the availability of highly qualified senior officials within the Auditor General's service. Dr. Harsha de Silva, the Chairman of the Committee on Public Finance and a member of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya party, made these allegations during a recent session of Parliament.

During the session, Dr. de Silva highlighted that while the Constitutional Council is set to convene to make a decision regarding the appointment of an Auditor General, there has yet to be any definitive conclusion reached on this matter. He expressed his disappointment over the lack of progress despite expectations that the announcement would be imminent.

Further elaborating on the issue, Dr. de Silva pointed out that no Auditor General has been appointed thus far. He noted that during his recent presentation to the Speaker of the House, it was suggested that the appointment was to be made yesterday. However, he revealed that, according to their information, an application had been submitted by an external candidate the day before.

Dr. de Silva raised critical questions regarding the government's intent to bring in a different candidate while the most senior official within the state audit service remains in place, indicating a potential political interference in the process.

He underscored the importance of the Auditor General's office as an entirely independent institution, stressing that the functions expected by the public must be fulfilled accordingly. As the Chairman of the Parliamentary Public Finance Committee, he made a strong appeal for the integrity and independence of the appointment process.
