Independent Investigation Announced Following Death of Endangered Elephant in Sri Lanka
Environmental Minister Dr. Dhamika Pathirana has announced the initiation of a comprehensive and independent investigation into the tragic death of the renowned "Kavinthissa" elephant, a prominent figure in the natural reserves of Sri Lanka.
Speaking to the media, the minister emphasized the importance of this inquiry, which aims to determine whether any medical oversight or delays occurred during the emergency treatment of the elephant, or if external malicious intent may have contributed to its death.
Dr. Pathirana expressed profound sorrow over the loss of such a valuable species, noting that all efforts had been made to save the elephant, which was in a critical condition following a gunshot wound to its front right leg. He underscored the Ministry's distress at losing this national treasure just when it had received maximum medical intervention to preserve its life.
Additionally, the minister revealed plans to enhance the veterinary facilities and operational frameworks of the Department of Wildlife to ensure rapid response and treatment for wild animals in distress in the future.
The "Kavinthissa" elephant, considered one of the largest and most majestic of Sri Lanka's wild elephant population, succumbed to its injuries on the 16th of this month after enduring weeks of treatment by wildlife veterinarians. Unfortunately, despite receiving care, the animal suffered severe dehydration due to a lack of food and water, leading to its demise.
