Intelligence Chief Orders Immediate Alert Following Threats to Major Buddhist Sites
Concerns have escalated regarding potential attacks on prominent Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka, including the Temple of the Tooth, Thooparamaya, and the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, set for November 19. In light of alarming information circulating on social media, Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama has instructed authorities at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to inform two senior intelligence officials without delay.
Even though officials from the CID’s Cyber Crime Unit uncovered this information ten days ago, the lack of confirmation regarding whether senior officers were properly briefed has prompted the magistrate to mandate a written report be submitted to the court immediately, outlining the details to the relevant state intelligence agency.
The magistrate emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that information suggesting attacks targeting the country's main Buddhist sites cannot be taken lightly. He noted that failing to take appropriate action in response to such serious threats could have severe consequences for a nation wary of its past experiences.
Additionally, a 21-year-old male from the Ibbaagamuwa area has been arrested and is currently in custody for promoting threats against several sacred sites, including the Dambulla Raja Maha Vihara, via social media. He allegedly shared distorted images of Buddha and made inflammatory statements.
Supporting this primary suspect’s activities on social media has led to the arrest of a minor, who was presented in court yesterday. The magistrate issued an order regarding this individual at that time.
According to the CID, the investigation commenced following a complaint lodged by Chief Incumbent Ven. Dhammananda Nayaka Thera of the Dambulla Raja Maha Vihara. They reported that statements and images distributed by the suspects reveal intentions to undermine Buddhism completely across the globe. These pieces of evidence will subsequently be presented to the court.
Considering the arrested minor's age, the police requested that he be placed under remand. The chief magistrate has ordered that he remain in custody until the 16th of this month, with a report to be called on that day.
