China's Major Investment Project in Colombo Port Scrapped Amid Economic Changes
The Chinese company China Merchants Port Holdings has taken a significant step back from a proposed massive commercial and logistics hub valued at $392 million in the Colombo Port area, as reported by India's 'The Hindu'. This decision marks a pivotal moment in Sri Lanka's Chinese investment landscape.
This project was introduced in 2023 as the first major foreign direct investment obtained by Sri Lanka, following a suspension of foreign debt repayments that began in 2022 amid an economic crisis. With this new investment, China Merchants reached a cumulative investment value of $2 billion in Sri Lanka.
According to the original agreement, China Merchants was expected to hold a 70% majority stake in the proposed commercial and logistics project, while the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and a local private construction firm were to share the remaining 30%, each with a 15% interest.
Following a thorough analysis of the current external environment, commercial factors, and the needs of all parties involved, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority indicated that both parties had mutually agreed to abandon the planned integrated project, as highlighted by 'The Hindu'.
In a statement to the Hong Kong stock market, China Merchants announced that after reassessing the project due to changing operational conditions and timeframes, as well as evolving commercial requirements from both sides, they concluded that halting the project was in the best interest of all stakeholders.
Nonetheless, even with the abandonment of this project, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority emphasized its commitment to quickly establish a new logistics hub through alternative development strategies under a transparent and competitive public-private partnership (PPP) framework.
