ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ බන්ධනාගාර පද්ධතිය තුළ මෑතකදී ඇති වූ ප්‍රචණ්ඩකාරී සිදුවීම් සම්බන්ධයෙන් සත්‍යය හෙළි කිරීම සහ වගවීම තහවුරු කිරීමේ අත්‍යවශ්‍යතාව එක්සත් ජාතීන්ගේ මානව හිමිකම් පිළිබඳ මහ කොමසාරිස් කාර්යාලය (OHCHR) අවධාරණය කරයි.

ජිනීවා නුවරදී විශේෂ නිවේදනයක් නිකුත් කරමින් එම කාර්යාලය පෙන්වා දෙන්නේ, බන්ධනාගාර තුළ සිදු වූ මරණ සහ තුවාල ලැබීම් පිළිබඳව කඩිනම්, ස්වාධීන සහ විනිවිදභාවයකින් යුත් විමර්ශනයක් පැවැත්වීම රජයේ වගකීමක් බවයි.

UN Human Rights Office Urges Immediate Investigation into Prison Violence in Sri Lanka

The recent surge of violent incidents within Sri Lanka's prison system has prompted the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to emphasize the critical need for transparency and accountability in the aftermath of these events.

In a statement released from Geneva, the OHCHR underscored that the government bears the responsibility to conduct a swift, independent, and transparent inquiry into reports of deaths and injuries occurring in prisons.

Particularly alarming are the conflicts reported in various facilities, including those in Meegamuwa, which have led to the deaths of detainees. The office expressed profound concern, stating that justice must be served for the victims and their families.

Moreover, the statement stressed the necessity for legal action against any individuals or officials deemed responsible for these occurrences, highlighting the obligation to hold them accountable.

The UN outlined that severe overcrowding in prisons, inhumane conditions for inmates, and long-standing systemic issues have been fundamental causes of the violence witnessed. They also stated that they are closely monitoring the steps taken by the Sri Lankan government towards prison reform.

There is a particular emphasis on ensuring that investigations into allegations of torture or ill-treatment of detainees adhere to international standards.

The OHCHR has called on Sri Lankan authorities to guarantee that independent bodies, like the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, are granted unobstructed access to prisons for conducting thorough investigations.
