උග්‍ර ජල හිඟයක්.. ජල සැපයුම දින තුනකට වරක් සීමා කෙරේ..

 මොනරාගල දිස්ත්‍රික්කයට බලපා ඇති දැඩි නියං තත්ත්වය හේතුවෙන් මොනරාගල නගරය ඇතුළු ප්‍රදේශ රැසක උග්‍ර ජල හිඟයක් හටගෙන තිබේ.

පවතින තත්ත්වය හමුවේ ජල සැපයුම දින තුනකට වරක් සීමා කිරීමට ජාතික ජල සම්පාදන හා ජලාපවාහන මණ්ඩලයේ මොනරාගල කාර්යාලය පියවර ගෙන ඇත.

මොනරාගල නගරයට ජලය සපයන ප්‍රධාන මූලාශ්‍ර දෙකම සිඳී යමින් පැවතීම මෙම අර්බුදයට ප්‍රධාන හේතුව වී තිබේ. මරගල කඳුවැටියෙන් ගලා බසින 'ජී ලෝන්' ජල මූලාශ්‍රය දැඩි වියළි කාලගුණය නිසා සැලකිය යුතු ලෙස සිඳී ගොස් ඇති අතර, ඉන් දිනකට පිරිසිදු කර බෙදා හරිනු ලබන ඝන මීටර් 3,500ක ජල ධාරිතාව ලබා ගැනීමට නොහැකි වී ඇත.

දෙවන ජල මූලාශ්‍රය වන කුඹුක්කන් ඔය මගින් දිනකට ජලය ඝන මීටර් 6,000ක් පමණ නිෂ්පාදනය කළද, එම ජලය බුත්තල, ඔක්කම්පිටිය, මඩුල්ල සහ මොනරාගල යන ප්‍රදේශ සියල්ලටම බෙදා හැරීමට සිදුවීම නිසා එය ප්‍රමාණවත් නොවන බව ජල සම්පාදන මණ්ඩලය පවසයි. මීට අමතරව, යාල වනෝද්‍යානය හරහා ගලා යන කුඹුක්කන් ඔය ජලය වනජීවීන්ගේ පැවැත්ම සඳහා ද අවශ්‍ය වන බැවින්, ඉන් වැඩි ජල ප්‍රමාණයක් ලබා ගැනීමට ද බාධා එල්ල වී තිබේ.

මරගල කඳුවැටිය ආශ්‍රිතව සිදුවන මානව ක්‍රියාකාරකම් හේතුවෙන් ජල මූලාශ්‍ර විනාශ වන බව පවසන ප්‍රදේශවාසීන්, එම ප්‍රදේශවල පදිංචිකරුවන් වෙනත් ස්ථානවල පදිංචි කරවා ජල පෝෂක ප්‍රදේශ සුරැකීමට කටයුතු කරන ලෙස බලධාරීන්ගෙන් ඉල්ලා සිටිති.

පවතින ජල අර්බුදයට විකල්පයක් ලෙස උස් බිම් ප්‍රදේශවලට බවුසර් මගින් ජලය සැපයීමටත්, අලුතින් නළ ළිං ඉදිකිරීමටත් ජල සම්පාදන මණ්ඩලය පියවර ගෙන ඇත.

ජලය අරපිරිමැස්මෙන් භාවිත කරන ලෙසත්, ජල කාන්දුවීම් හෝ නළ කැඩීම් පවතී නම් වහාම දැනුම් දෙන ලෙසත් මණ්ඩලය පාරිභෝගිකයන්ගෙන් ඉල්ලා සිටී.

මොනරාගල ජල ගැටලුවට ස්ථිර විසඳුමක් ලෙස 2019 වසරේදී මුල්ගල තැබූ කුඹුක්කන් ඔය ජලාශ ව්‍යාපෘතිය මෙතෙක් නිම නොවීම පිළිබඳව ද ජනතාව සිය කණගාටුව පළ කරති. මෙම ව්‍යාපෘතිය මගින් පානීය ජලය මෙන්ම වාරි ජලය සහ විදුලිය නිපදවීමට ද සැලසුම් කර තිබිණි.

Severe Water Crisis Hits Monaragala District Amidst Harsh Weather Conditions

Monaragala is grappling with a dire water shortage affecting numerous areas, including the town itself, as severe weather conditions persist. The local office of the National Water Supply and Drainage Board has announced a decision to restrict water supply to once every three days in response to the prevailing circumstances.

The crisis is primarily linked to the depletion of the two main water sources supplying Monaragala. The "Gee Lon" water source, which is fed by the Maragala reservoir, has significantly diminished due to the harsh drought, resulting in an inability to extract the usual daily capacity of 3,500 cubic meters of clean water.

Meanwhile, the second source, the Kumbukkan Oya, has been managing to produce about 6,000 cubic meters of water daily. However, its distribution is stretched thin as it serves not only Monaragala but also Buddhal, Okkampitiya, and Madulla, rendering it insufficient. The water sourced from Kumbukkan Oya is also critical for sustaining wildlife in Yala National Park, further complicating efforts to increase water extraction.

Residents have reported that human activities related to the Maragala reservoir are damaging water sources and have urged authorities to facilitate the relocation of citizens in these areas to protect vital water supply zones.

In an attempt to mitigate the water scarcity, the Water Supply Board is taking steps to provide water to highland areas via tankers and to initiate the construction of new pipelines.

The Board has appealed to consumers to use water judiciously and to report any leaks or pipe breaks immediately to address the ongoing crisis effectively.

Moreover, the community has expressed disappointment over the unfinished Kumbukkan Oya reservoir project, initially launched in 2019, which was intended to secure drinking water, irrigation, and electricity generation for the region.
