Recent disturbances at Meegamuwa Prison have prompted authorities to take immediate action, leading to the transfer of all female inmates to other correctional facilities across the country. This decision comes in light of significant damage caused to the prison premises during the unrest.

A.C. Gajanayake, the media spokesperson for the Department of Prisons and the Commissioner of Prisons, confirmed that a total of 166 female inmates were relocated as an emergency security and administrative measure.

The main reason behind this transfer was the substantial structural damage inflicted on the prison buildings due to the escalating conflict. The authorities emphasized the necessity of ensuring the safety of the inmates while facilitating essential renovations at Meegamuwa Prison, which have been deemed crucial following the incidents.

The transferred inmates have been moved to various facilities, including Vavuniya, Bogambara, Angunakolapelessa, and Kuruwita. The Commissioner further highlighted that this measure aims to allow for immediate restoration efforts at Meegamuwa Prison while safeguarding the well-being of all individuals involved.
