Severe Shortages of Essential Medicines in Sri Lanka Raises Alarm Among Medical Professionals
The healthcare system in Sri Lanka is grappling with a critical shortage of over 40 essential types of medications, including the dengue vaccine. This alarming situation has persisted for several years, with modern drug approval processes experiencing significant delays, according to the Medical Professional Association for Health and Civil Rights.
Dr. Chamath Sanjeewa, President of the association, highlighted the urgent issue surrounding the delayed introduction of the 'Qdenga' vaccine, which has been utilized globally for dengue patients, stressing that the approval has taken nearly two years longer than necessary.
He emphasized the need for immediate investigation into whether the delays imposed by the National Medicines Regulatory Authority are intentional.
Critical drugs such as 'Oxaliplatin', used in cancer treatment, and 'Filgrastim', vital for white blood cell enhancement, have been in short supply for an extended period within the hospital system. Dr. Sanjeewa warned that this scarcity places the lives of individuals suffering from severe medical conditions in jeopardy.
Despite the lack of official approval for cutting-edge treatments like 'Mounjaro' for diabetes and obesity management, Dr. Sanjeewa pointed out that such drugs are still accessible on the black market. "While authorized representatives wait for legal approvals, illegal vendors are smuggling these medications without proper refrigeration. If a patient dies due to the use of such drugs, who takes responsibility?" he questioned.
The pricing regulations enforced by the National Medicines Regulatory Authority have hindered private hospitals from accessing high-quality pharmaceutical materials. This has led to a decline in the standards of laboratory reports and increased risks of misdiagnosis, which could contribute to patient fatalities, according to medical professionals.
Specialist doctors have proposed the following reforms to the government as solutions to the ongoing crisis:
1. **Online Tracking System**: Establishing a transparent online system that allows the public to monitor the process from drug registration to approval.
2. **Fast-Track Approvals**: Granting expedited approvals for drugs recognized by international bodies such as the WHO or FDA, bypassing lengthy local trials.
3. **WHO Standard Laboratories**: Setting up laboratories that meet international standards to test every category of imported drug before it reaches the market.
4. **Raids on Black Market Operations**: Conducting regular operations to eliminate the illegal drug trade flourishing across the country.
5. **Scientific Pricing Formula**: Introducing a flexible pricing formula aligned with the value of the dollar and global market prices.
