Former Sri Lankan Cricketer Convicted for Sexual Assault in Australia
In a significant legal development, Suranjith Silva, a former Sri Lankan ‘A’ team cricketer now coaching in Melbourne, has been found guilty of sexual assault by the Broadmeadows Magistrates' Court in Australia.
The 51-year-old Silva was accused of committing the assault without the consent of the victim in the Glenroy area, a claim that has resulted in his conviction.
Despite pleading not guilty and requesting a lengthy trial to prove his innocence, the court determined, after reviewing the evidence presented, that he had indeed committed the offense.
In her testimony read in court, the victim expressed the severe trauma and psychological distress she suffered from the incident. "This was a direct violation of my privacy and boundaries. It was something I did not consent to or want. It took me months to return to a normal life," she stated.
Representing Silva, lawyer Daniel Sala argued in court that the incident was merely a "momentary lapse or weakness" on his client's part. He highlighted that as a permanent resident in Australia, this conviction could severely impact Silva's professional endeavors and visa status, urging the court to consider this when determining sentencing.
However, the police countered this argument strongly, emphasizing that the victim had been in a vulnerable position and that Silva’s refusal to admit guilt and his decision to pursue a trial had subjected her to further distress. The police underlined that there should be no leniency granted to the perpetrator.
After considering all presented evidence, the magistrate ordered a pre-sentence report to evaluate community service orders before finalizing the sentence, which is set to be announced on October 26.
