Sri Lanka's Trade Deficit Soars to $5.5 Billion in Early 2026
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has revealed a significant expansion in the country’s trade deficit, reaching an alarming $5.5 billion in the first six months of 2026.
The findings, outlined in the latest monetary policy report, attribute this dramatic shift primarily to a surge in import expenditures outpacing export revenues.
According to the data, the total import expenditure for the first half of 2026 stands at $12.4 billion, while the export income during the same period is only $6.9 billion.
This disparity has caused a noteworthy decline in the previously established surplus of the current account, with a reported shortfall of $245 million in the first half of 2026.
The rise in imports is largely driven by skyrocketing costs associated with fuel and vehicle imports.
In light of ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle Eastern region, the global oil prices have surged, marking a 58.8% increase in fuel import costs, which now total $3.2 billion. Additionally, private and commercial vehicle imports have accounted for another $1.3 billion.
To mitigate this situation, the government has implemented an additional 50% tax on imported vehicles, while the Central Bank has tightened financing limits for vehicles.
These measures are expected to lower demand for vehicle imports in the coming months, alleviating some pressure on the trade deficit, according to the Central Bank's projections.
