Special Meeting Focuses on Strengthening Dengue Control Efforts in Sri Lanka

In a critical gathering held on August 5 at the outpatient section of the National Hospital in Colombo, Health and Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa led a special meeting aimed at reviewing the current status of dengue high-risk areas and reinforcing measures for dengue mosquito control. This initiative comes in light of the ongoing concerns surrounding dengue outbreaks in the country.

The meeting was organized by the National Dengue Control Programme, which invited health officials from dengue-affected zones across the country as well as public health sector representatives. The main focus was to minimize the issues observed in previous dengue control operations while enhancing future efforts against the mosquito menace.

Participants reviewed the shortcomings of past operations during the dengue high-risk period, identified lapses in protocols, and gathered fresh insights from health professionals. They also discussed current challenges in the field, pinpointed areas requiring concentrated attention, and identified high-risk zones that need immediate intervention.

Furthermore, discussions highlighted the need for integrated special operational strategies, strengthening technological support, and adapting to changing environmental conditions. Emphasis was also placed on enhancing treatment services and minimizing fatalities, which represents a key focus of the discussions.

Minister Jayatissa stressed the importance of implementing a comprehensive dengue eradication program over the next two years, assuring dedicated efforts towards achieving this goal. He acknowledged the contributions of health professionals across all sectors during the recent high-risk period, indicating that these efforts were pivotal in reducing dengue-related fatalities.

It was also pointed out that the current mosquito control strategies should be intensified due to a decrease in reported dengue cases. Under the oversight of the Health Ministry, a targeted mosquito control campaign is to be executed at the grassroots level, from community health officers to public health initiatives, aiming for a sustained and adaptive approach to dengue control.

Dr. Kapila Kannangara, the director of the National Dengue Control Unit, highlighted that although a dengue high-risk situation still exists, past initiatives have shown a significant reduction in reported cases, with the daily number dropping from approximately 1,300 to around 350–400 cases.

As of now, a total of 87,536 dengue patients and 63 fatalities have been reported for the year. With attention on the imminent rainy season and potential climatic changes, ongoing vigilance in mosquito control efforts is deemed crucial. This underscores the necessity for continuous and well-structured plans as indicated by Anil Jasinghe, the Secretary of the Health and Media Ministry, who also advocated for flexibility in response strategies to combat the dengue threat effectively.

The meeting culminated in a call for collective and sustained efforts from all health staff to "eliminate dengue" and implement alternative plans to ensure public health safety amidst evolving challenges.
