Administrative Crisis Unfolds Over Appointment of SriLankan Airlines CEO

Significant administrative turmoil has erupted between Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva and Deputy Minister Janaka Kodithuwakku as they clash over the appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer for SriLankan Airlines, according to reports from the Daily Mirror.

The tension peaked during a disciplinary inquiry convened by the Deputy Minister last Monday, where the Minister's direct intervention exacerbated the dispute.

This inquiry was initially intended to address the reinstatement of an employee who had been suspended but was postponed and then abruptly halted following the Minister's involvement.

While the Civil Aviation sector operates under the Deputy Minister's jurisdiction, insiders reveal that such interferences from the Minister have hindered the resolution of ongoing management issues within the national carrier.

Parliamentary oversight committee chairman S.M. Marikkar previously criticized the failure to appoint a permanent CEO for SriLankan Airlines for the past 16 months, highlighting the need for timely leadership in the troubled airline.

Despite two rounds of interviews and numerous applications being received, the inability to identify a suitable candidate over four months has been described as a lamentable situation.

The decision to fill this vacancy by appointing an internal candidate has led to the shortlisting of the Head of Information Technology and the Head of Commercial. Reports suggest that the Minister unilaterally selected Chamara Perera as the preferred candidate for this position without consulting the Deputy Minister.

However, due to serious allegations of corruption and misconduct surrounding the Information Technology division under Perera's management, the Minister has temporarily suspended this appointment in light of public criticism on social media.

Concerns have also been raised by professional unions regarding the detrimental impact that such allegations could have on the institution and its culture during Perera's management.

Notably, trade unions associated with the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna have indicated plans to take action against the proposed appointment in the future.
