Geological Expert Warns of Potential Disasters in Sri Lanka Following Nepal Tragedy
Recent geological events, including a tragic landslide in Nepal, underscored the urgent need for Sri Lanka to prepare for similar occurrences, warned former Senior Professor Athula Senaratne from the University of Peradeniya's Department of Earth Science and Geography.
Professor Senaratne pointed out that the disaster in Nepal serves as a stark reminder for Sri Lanka about the vulnerabilities it faces. He highlighted the recent "Dithwa" cyclone, during which a significant landslide occurred in the Sarasiwama region, resulting in the loss of more than 20 lives as the landslide engulfed the entire village.
In areas near rivers and water bodies, the risk escalates significantly when landslides cause large rocks and debris to block waterways. Such blockages may lead to sudden and destructive floods when the amassed water breaches the obstacles unexpectedly, he cautioned.
Moreover, Professor Senaratne stressed the importance of mapping areas prone to common landslides and identifying regions at risk of sudden floods due to blocked waterways. He emphasized that timely warnings and hazard mapping would be essential in preventing tragedies similar to the Sarasiwama landslide in the future.
By taking proactive measures, it may be possible to avert such catastrophic incidents going forward, the professor concluded.
