Recent investigations by Dubai authorities have revealed a troubling connection between a prominent Sri Lankan drug trafficker, Shirān Bāshik, and multiple images of Iranian drones and missiles found on his mobile phone. This alarming discovery highlights the potential extent of illicit activities tied to international narcotics operations.
As the details emerged, officials from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) engaged in extensive questioning of Bāshik while he was in Dubai. Their inquiries focused particularly on whether he maintained ties with Iran's defense sectors and the nature of those relationships.
However, investigations indicated that these connections were limited strictly to drug trafficking relations, devoid of any political or defense-related implications. Following this clarification, U.S. authorities reportedly ceased further questioning of Bāshik.
Concurrently, Sri Lankan officials have launched a comprehensive investigation into Bāshik’s domestic illegal assets and other smuggling activities. Details have surfaced concerning two residences linked to him, two mobile phone retail outlets in Boralesgamuwa, and five hotels located along Marine Drive in Colombo.
Additionally, information has come to light regarding a suspected accomplice, a teacher believed to be involved in drug trafficking, who, along with his wife, has reportedly fled to Thailand. The police have issued red notices through Interpol for 93 individuals connected to various criminal activities within Sri Lanka, and have successfully repatriated 40 individuals associated with organized and narcotics-related crimes this year alone.
