 සීගිරිය අභයභූමිය තුළ පිහිටි පෞද්ගලික ඉඩමක වනජීවී දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ පූර්ව අවසරයකින් තොරව වගා ළිඳක් කැපීම සහ ගස් කපා දැමීම සම්බන්ධයෙන් ප්‍රවීණ නළු ගාමිණී ෆොන්සේකා මහතාගේ පුත් දමිත් ෆොන්සේකා ඇතුළු පුද්ගලයන් දෙදෙනෙකු වනජීවී නිලධාරීන් විසින් අත්අඩංගුවට ගෙන තිබේ.

අභයභූමිය තුළ බැකෝ යන්ත්‍ර යොදාගෙන වගා ළිඳක් කපන බවටත් ඒ සඳහා ගස් කපා දමා ඇති බවටත් වනජීවී නිලධාරීන්ට ලැබුණු තොරතුරක් මත මෙම වැටලීම සිදු කර ඇත.

එහිදී වගා ළිඳ කැපීමට යොදාගත් බැකෝ යන්ත්‍රයක්, ලොරි රථයක්, ට්‍රැක්ටරයක් සහ කපා දමන ලද ගස්වල දැව කඳන් නිලධාරීන් භාරයට ගෙන තිබේ.

සීගිරිය වනජීවී කාර්යාලයේ අඩවි ආරක්ෂක මලින්ද මහතා පෙන්වා දෙන්නේ, අභයභූමියක් ලෙස ප්‍රකාශයට පත් කර ඇති කලාපයක පිහිටි පෞද්ගලික ඉඩමක වුවද කිසියම් ඉදිකිරීමක්, කැණීමක් හෝ ගස් කැපීමක් සිදු කරන්නේ නම් වනජීවී දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ නිසි අවසරය ලබා ගැනීම අනිවාර්ය බවයි.

අත්අඩංගුවට ගත් සැකකරුවන් වනජීවී නිලධාරීන් හමුවේ පවසා ඇත්තේ, අදාළ ඉඩම පෞද්ගලික ඉඩමක් බැවින් මෙවැනි නීතිමය තත්ත්වයක් පිළිබඳව තමන් දැනුවත්ව නොසිටි බවයි.

අත්අඩංගුවට ගත් සැකකරුවන් හෙට (31) දඹුල්ල මහේස්ත්‍රාත් අධිකරණය වෙත ඉදිරිපත් කිරීමට නියමිතව ඇත.

Two Arrested for Illegal Land Clearing in Sigiriya

In a significant enforcement action, wildlife officers have apprehended two individuals, including prominent actor Gamini Fonseka's son, Damith Fonseka, for unauthorized land clearing activities on a private property located within the Abhayagiri Sanctuary.

The arrests stemmed from reports that heavy machinery, specifically a backhoe, was being used to excavate a planting pit and clear trees without prior permission from the relevant authorities. Wildlife officials acted on this intelligence, leading to the operation.

Items seized during the operation included the backhoe, a lorry, a tractor, and cut tree stumps, all of which are now in the custody of the authorities.

Malinda, a security officer from the Sigiriya wildlife office, emphasized that any construction, excavation, or tree felling within areas designated as sanctuaries necessitates proper clearance from the Department of Wildlife Conservation.

The suspects claimed during their questioning that they were unaware of the legal implications of their actions, given that the land is privately owned.

They are scheduled to be presented in the Dambulla Magistrate's Court tomorrow, the 31st.
