Cabinet Issues Guidelines for Lifting Coconut Cultivation Ban
The Cabinet has directed the Ministry of Agriculture and Community Infrastructure to prepare decisive measures for lifting the ban on coconut cultivation. This comes after the ban was instituted in 2021, based on findings from a panel of experts under the Central Environmental Authority, which noted the adverse impacts on the ecosystem.
In recent times, agricultural companies have persistently approached the government to allow expansion of coconut farming. An expert committee appointed by the Ministry has recommended that coconut cultivation could be expanded to an area of up to 20,000 hectares in the country.
Currently, around 9,500 hectares are under coconut cultivation, and since the implementation of the ban, agricultural companies have filed multiple lawsuits in the courts regarding this matter.
Reports indicate that the Ministry is currently seeking guidance from the Attorney General's Department on the next steps related to these legal proceedings.
Additionally, preserving foreign exchange allocated for importing oil has been cited as another reason for this decision. Data reports indicate that in 2025 alone, Sri Lanka imported approximately 38,210 metric tons of palm oil and 33,696 metric tons of coconut oil.
