Severe El Niño Conditions Expected in Sri Lanka

The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning about the potential development of one of the most severe and intense El Niño weather patterns recorded in Sri Lanka over the past 76 years. This phenomenon is anticipated to emerge in the upcoming months.

Due to disturbances in the lower atmosphere surrounding the island and the strengthening of the El Niño event, the Director General Ajith Wijemanne has noted that heavy rainfall may begin affecting many areas of the country from this afternoon (20).

As a result, there is an elevated risk of flash floods and landslides, prompting the public to stay vigilant and closely monitor weather forecasts.

Highlighting data from international meteorological predictions and global computer models, the Director General emphasized that conditions are likely to peak in intensity over the next three months.

Significantly, a marked increase in rainfall across the country is expected during October and November, with the eastern regions potentially receiving above-average precipitation in December.

There is a 69% to 75% likelihood that this developing El Niño will become one of the most intense instances since 1950. The probability of it escalating into an ‘extremely strong El Niño’ by February is approaching 100%.

Although increased rainfall is forecasted, temperatures across the country are predicted to remain elevated compared to average levels.

Moreover, a significant shift in weather patterns is expected between January and April of the upcoming year. During this period, there may be a gradual decrease in rainfall alongside excessively hot weather, with conditions in February, March, and April predicted to create very dry spells and extreme heat.
