Sri Lanka's Economic Growth Faces Setbacks, Warns Economic Analyst

The economic growth rate in Sri Lanka has once again dipped into a sluggish state, with current performance failing to reach levels witnessed in 2018, as highlighted by Dhananath Fernando, Chief Executive Officer of the Advocata Institute and economic analyst.

An analysis of the latest data from the Department of Census and Statistics reveals a drop in the economic growth rate from 5.1% in the first quarter of the year to approximately 4.2% by the second quarter.

Despite previously showing positive growth, the decline in momentum is not a promising sign for the country's future, Fernando emphasized.

Specifically examining the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the reported value for the second quarter stands at approximately Rs. 3,029.8 billion, which remains around 2% lower than that of the second quarter in 2018, recorded at Rs. 3,121.5 billion. This indicates that the economic crisis has significantly impacted the living standards of the population, reversing progress over the past eight to ten years.

Sector-specific evaluations of the second quarter indicate a contraction of 2.3% in the agricultural sector, with paddy production falling by 15.1% and mineral oil-related production also facing a decline by close to 15%. On a more positive note, the industrial sector reported a 7.3% growth, mainly driven by a surge in construction (13.9%) and manufacturing (17.4%). The services sector recorded a modest growth of 2.7%.

Fernando pointed out that the slowdown in economic growth poses a direct threat to the income avenues and wage increases for the general populace, potentially leading to a rise in poverty levels. He warned that this could exacerbate the country's already precarious debt situation following recent restructuring efforts. Furthermore, continued erosion of international credit ratings could also ensue.

To combat these pressing challenges, it is essential to sustain long-term economic growth between 6% and 7%. Fernando stressed that this will require urgent and broad economic reforms not just in land management and labor markets but also improvements in the efficiency of the public sector. Without such reforms promptly enacted, the country risks years of regression.
