 ඉදිරි අයවැයෙන් පොත් සඳහා පනවා ඇති වැට් බදුවල වෙනසක් සිදු කිරීම කෙරෙහි රජයේ අවධානය යොමුවී ඇති බව අග්‍රාමාත්‍ය ආචාර්ය හරිනි අමරසූරිය ප්‍රකාශ කළාය.

ශ්‍රී ලංකා පොත් ප්‍රකාශකයන්ගේ සංගමය මගින් 27 වැනි වරටත් සංවිධානය කරනු ලබන කොළඹ ජාත්‍යන්තර පොත් ප්‍රදර්ශනය අද (25) කොළඹ බණ්ඩාරනායක සම්මන්ත්‍රණ ශාලා පරිශ්‍රයේදී නිල වශයෙන් විවෘත කරමින් පැවැති සමාරම්භක උත්සවයට එක්වෙමින් අග්‍රාමාත්‍යතුමිය මේ බව පැවසුවාය. 

ශ්‍රී ලංකා පොත් ප්‍රකාශකයන්ගේ සංගමය මගින් පවත්වාගෙන යනු ලබන “දරු දිරිය” ශිෂ්‍යත්ව අරමුදල යටතේ සිසුන් වෙත ශිෂ්‍යාධාර ප්‍රදානය කිරීම ද අග්‍රාමාත්‍යතුමියගේ ප්‍රධානත්වයෙන් මෙහිදී සිදු කෙරිණි.

එහිදී වැඩිදුරටත් අදහස් දැක්වූ අග්‍රාමාත්‍යතුමිය සඳහන් කළේ, මෙවර අයවැය තුළින් පොත් සඳහා පනවා ඇති වැට් බදුවල විශේෂ වෙනසක් සිදු කිරීමට හැකියාව ලැබෙනු ඇති බව ප්‍රකාශ කරන ලෙස ජනාධිපතිතුමා තමන්ට විශේෂයෙන් දැනුම් දුන් බවයි.

පොත්වල වටිනාකම දන්නා රජයක් ලෙස එවැනි වෙනසක් ජනතාවට කෙතරම් වැදගත් ද යන්න රජය හොඳින්ම වටහාගෙන ඇති බව ද අග්‍රාමාත්‍යතුමිය සඳහන් කළාය.

කොළඹ ජාත්‍යන්තර පොත් ප්‍රදර්ශනය, වසරකට වරක් පැවැත්වෙන තවත් එක් ප්‍රදර්ශනයක් පමණක් නොව, එය මෙරට ලක්ෂ සංඛ්‍යාත ජනතාවක් බලාපොරොත්තුවෙන් සිටින සංස්කෘතික ජීවිතයේම කොටසක් බවත්, 1999 වසරේ ඇරඹි මෙම ගමන දශක දෙකකට වැඩි කාලයක් පුරා මෙරට කියවීමේ සංස්කෘතිය පෝෂණය කර ඇති බවත් අග්‍රාමාත්‍යතුමිය පෙන්වා දුන්නාය.

කියවීම යනු වෙනත් අයෙකුගේ ජීවිතයක්, සමාජයක්, සංස්කෘතියක් හා මතයක් තේරුම් ගැනීම බවත්, සහකම්පනයෙන් යුතු සමාජයක් ගොඩනැගීමට එය මහත් පිටිවහලක් වන බවත් අග්‍රාමාත්‍යතුමිය සඳහන් කළාය. 

නව අධ්‍යාපන ප්‍රතිසංස්කරණ හරහා දරුවන්ගේ කියවීමේ රුචිය වර්ධනය කිරීමට මෙන්ම පාසල් කාලය තුළ කියවීම සඳහා වැඩි කාලයක් වෙන් කිරීමේ වැදගත්කම පිළිබඳව ද අග්‍රාමාත්‍යතුමිය මෙහිදී පැවසුවාය. 

මෙම අවස්ථාවට රාජ්‍ය තාන්ත්‍රිකයන්, ශ්‍රී ජයවර්ධනපුර විශ්වවිද්‍යාලයේ උපකුලපති මහාචාර්ය උපුල් සුබසිංහ, ශ්‍රී ලංකා පොත් ප්‍රකාශකයන්ගේ සංගමයේ සභාපති අතුල ජයකොඩි යන මහත්වරුන් ඇතුළු ලේඛකයන්, ප්‍රකාශකයන් සහ ආරාධිත පිරිසක් විශාල සංඛ්‍යාවක් එක්ව සිටියහ.

Government Considering Changes to VAT on Books, Says Prime Minister

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has revealed that the government is focusing on potential adjustments to the Value Added Tax (VAT) on books in the upcoming budget.

This announcement was made during the inaugural ceremony of the Colombo International Book Fair, organized by the Sri Lanka Publishers Association for the 27th consecutive year. The event took place today (25) at the Bandaranaike Memorial Conference Hall in Colombo.

Additionally, under the "Daru Diriya" scholarship fund, the Prime Minister presided over the distribution of educational grants to students during the same event.

Further expressing her views, the Prime Minister noted that the President specifically informed her that the upcoming budget will present an opportunity to make significant changes to the VAT applied to books.

She emphasized that the government fully understands the importance of such changes given the value of literature and its significance to the public.

The Colombo International Book Fair, an annual cultural event, is not merely an exhibition; it has fostered a reading culture in Sri Lanka for over two decades since its inception in 1999, as highlighted by the Prime Minister.

Reading, she explained, serves as a gateway to understanding others' lives, societies, cultures, and perspectives, thus playing a critical role in building an empathetic community.

Moreover, the Prime Minister stressed the need to enhance children's reading interests through new educational reforms, advocating for allocating more time for reading during school hours.

The event attracted a significant turnout, including government officials, Professor Upul Subasinghe, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, and Athula Jayakodi, the President of the Sri Lanka Publishers Association, among numerous authors, publishers, and invited guests.
