He emphasized that allowing the media to propagate misleading and false information about his administration is unacceptable, hinting that other news outlets may soon face similar actions.
Responding to questions from reporters in the Oval Office, Trump clarified that this decision is not based on any single incident; rather, it reflects a cumulative effect of negative coverage directed at the Republican Party and his presidency over the past two years.
Defending his decision, U.S. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper indicated that certain reports published by these media entities could jeopardize the lives of American servicemen. This assertion adds a layer of gravity to the allegations of irresponsible journalism.
However, this stringent measure has been met with fierce backlash from media organizations and legal experts, who perceive it as an attack on press freedom and a violation of the constitutional framework. CNN maintains that its reporting is fair and accurate, highlighting that freedom of the press is safeguarded by the Constitution. Bruce Brown, chair of the Committee to Protect Journalists, pointed out that restricting coverage simply for disagreeing with a media outlet’s reporting constitutes a blatant violation of constitutional principles, signaling that this decision may face judicial challenges.
