No Commitment on Rice Price Assurance, Says Deputy Minister Namal Karunarathna

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Namal Karunarathna, firmly stated that he has never declared a commitment to ensuring a guaranteed price of Rs. 150 per kilogram of rice. During comments made to the media, he emphasized that his established policy has consistently been focused on determining the price of rice based on the actual production cost, adding a profit margin of 30 percent to arrive at the guaranteed price.

The Deputy Minister accused the opposition of making misleading statements intended to misguide the public. He clarified that such actions are currently undermining the truth surrounding rice pricing.

Karunarathna also recalled past remarks made during both the presidential and general elections, where he, as the National Organizer of the All Sri Lanka Farmers' Federation, had indicated that a minimum price of Rs. 150 per kilogram would be established should the National People's Power gain control. These statements circulated extensively on social media and were promoted on opposition political platforms, fueling recent public discourse.
