IMF Reveals Lack of Discussion with Sri Lanka on Alleged Illicit Dollar Transfers
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has stated that there have been no discussions with Sri Lankan authorities regarding allegations that nearly one billion US dollars have been illicitly transferred out of the country under the guise of false import payments. This statement comes in light of recent claims made by the Sri Lankan government.
Responding to inquiries from the Daily Mirror, an IMF spokesperson emphasized the importance of continuing good governance reforms and anti-corruption measures within the country. He pointed out, "We have not yet engaged in discussions with Sri Lankan authorities on this matter. However, it is crucial for Sri Lanka to strengthen governance and maintain its anti-corruption initiatives moving forward."
Previously, President Ranil Wickremesinghe disclosed that a substantial sum, amounting to nearly one billion dollars, has been illegally siphoned out of the nation without any goods being imported, disguised merely as payments for imports.
A key condition of the extensive loan program provided by the IMF hinges on confirming good governance and the implementation of anti-corruption reforms. The IMF had previously prepared a 'Governance Diagnostic Report' addressing weaknesses in Sri Lanka's public administration and financial systems, marking the first instance of such a report being issued for an Asian country.
In conjunction with these recommendations and reforms, Sri Lankan authorities have recently taken steps to pass and implement a new anti-corruption law, aimed at preventing financial fraud and corruption.
