Fuel Shortage Threatens Sri Lanka Amid Subsidy Dispute
Sri Lanka is facing a potential fuel crisis as foreign fuel companies operating in the country are restricting supply due to insufficient subsidies provided by the Lanka Mineral Oil Corporation. This restriction has heightened fears of a fuel shortage across the nation.
The Corporation recently decided to offer a subsidy of Rs. 70 per liter of diesel to these foreign companies distributing fuel in the local market. However, the companies have expressed that this amount is far from adequate, with requests for higher subsidies ranging from Rs. 135 to Rs. 247 per liter, leading to escalating tensions between the parties involved.
Currently, several companies, including Lanka Indian Oil Corporation, Sinopec, and RM Parks, have been limiting their daily supply for several weeks. Reports indicate continuous discussions with the Ministry of Energy to resolve the ongoing issues surrounding fuel distribution.
Despite a recent decision by the government to increase fuel prices, firms have continued to restrict fuel distribution, stating that the incremental price adjustments are insufficient to cover their costs, according to statements from representatives of fuel filling stations.
In fact, last week, some companies completely suspended diesel supply, causing significant inconvenience to consumers. Filling station operators have strongly urged authorities to take immediate and sustainable action to address this pressing issue.
