Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa Appeals to Supreme Court Over Terrorism Prevention Law

In a significant legal move, former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has filed an appeal with the Supreme Court, challenging a decision by the Court of Appeal that dismissed his request for an order to prevent his arrest under the Prevention of Terrorism Act related to investigations into the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks.

This special appeal lists the Inspector General of Police and the Director of the Criminal Investigation Department among the respondents. Rajapaksa's concern stems from the looming possibility of his detention in connection with the ongoing investigations into the series of attacks that took place on Easter Sunday.

Previously, he had sought the intervention of the Court of Appeal, requesting a writ order to preempt his arrest based on the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act. However, the Court of Appeal ruled against his petition without a hearing, prompting Rajapaksa to escalate the matter to the Supreme Court.

With the appeal now in the hands of the nation's highest court, attention remains focused on how this legal battle will unfold amid the backdrop of ongoing investigations into the tragic events that shocked the country.
