Regional Workshop on Future of Maritime Trade Launched in Colombo

The U.S. Embassy organized a significant workshop focusing on the future of maritime trade in the region, marked by the presence of key figures including the Deputy Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation, Jayantha Kodithuwakku, the current U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Eric Meyer, and Dr. Parakrama Disanayake, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, on the 27th in Colombo.

Recently, the United States has committed $17 million towards the revitalization of the Colombo Port, reinforcing its partnership with Sri Lanka. This funding aims to enhance naval services and information exchange systems while developing community-based port systems.

The workshop, themed “Enhancing Naval Services and Information Exchange Systems and Developing Port Community Systems,” is set to bring together decision-makers in the regional port sector alongside representatives from 11 American technological firms. The initiative seeks to unveil new commercial opportunities across the Indian Ocean for U.S. businesses, while also facilitating streamlined port operations, accelerating goods transportation, reducing shipping costs, and strengthening supply chains through innovative American technologies.

In his remarks, Deputy Minister Jayantha Kodithuwakku highlighted the true value of the workshop lies in the shared knowledge, exchanged experiences, and identified opportunities for enhancing port operations. He affirmed that Sri Lanka is continuously modernizing its maritime sector and emphasized the importance of this partnership in furthering technical advancements that support the expansion of port infrastructure. Kodithuwakku reiterated the nation’s commitment to developing an efficient, technologically advanced, and internationally competitive port sector that strengthens Sri Lanka's position in global supply chains, supports growth in international trade, and contributes to sustainable economic development. He extended sincere gratitude to the U.S. government, the U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka, the organizers, participating technology companies, and everyone involved in making the workshop a success.
