Fuel Supply Crisis Deepens as Private Companies Call for Government Action

The Energy Ministry's failure to address the demands of private fuel distribution companies has led to a continued limitation on fuel supplies, according to the Association of Petroleum Distributors. Their announcement underscores the growing fuel scarcity affecting multiple regions across the country.

Since the 18th, long queues of vehicles have been reported near petrol stations nationwide, with several districts grappling with shortages of petrol and diesel. Signs indicating 'Out of Fuel' have become commonplace at various locations, reflecting the frustration of consumers.

Distributors have pointed out that, under the current circumstances, only fuel stations affiliated with the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation are actively supplying fuel, further highlighting the constraints faced by private operators.

Among the private firms, Sinopec has reportedly reduced its fuel distribution to a minimum level, with many of its stations shut down. This decision speaks to the growing difficulties the company faces amid the ongoing crisis.

Although sufficient fuel reserves are available in the country, consumers have encountered significant hardships due to restrictions on fuel distribution at the corporate level.

Private fuel companies have expressed their concerns, stating that operating under the current government-set prices has resulted in severe financial losses, prompting the need to limit supplies. Despite their repeated calls for timely and effective solutions from the Energy Ministry, they have yet to receive an adequate response.
