President Accuses Mainstream Media of Creating Unrest Amid Anti-Corruption Efforts
In a bold assertion, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has claimed that two leading television channels are conspiring to fabricate an artificial crisis in response to the government's stringent measures against corruption, drug trafficking, and organized crime. This revelation came during a speech at a district women's conference of the National People's Power in Badulla.
The President emphasized that established networks benefitting from corruption and narcotics dealings have been thrown into disarray as the current administration takes decisive actions to dismantle these illicit operations. He pointed out that, in a backdrop of relative calm among the public, certain groups are utilizing these media outlets to project a narrative of turmoil across the country.
Dissanayake also referenced a past drug-related incident involving a sibling of a media channel owner, which had surfaced during a previous government. The statement highlighted the involvement of a prominent drug trafficker, known as 'Wele Suda,' who allegedly funneled money through the media figure's family. The President stressed that these accusations are not new but stem from previous administrations.
The networks of organized crime in Sri Lanka have long been intertwined with political figures, illicit businesses, underworld leaders, and certain segments of the media, according to Dissanayake. He asserted that these corrupt alliances that have flourished in the past now appear to be vigorously opposing the government's crackdown initiatives.
He further called attention to the necessity of thorough investigations into fraud and corruption, asserting that no individual should be afforded immunity from accountability in such inquiries.
During his address, the President remarked on the current state of law enforcement, noting that a framework ensuring equal application of the law is emerging in the country. He observed a shift where groups that had previously benefited from political and legal privileges are now beginning to voice their dissent.
"Who is ultimately responsible for upholding the law? Parliament enacts the laws. The Attorney General's Department and the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption execute the cases. Investigations related to these cases are conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department, the police, and the bribery commission. Ultimately, these matters are adjudicated by the courts, with the Supreme Court rendering final decisions. Once the Supreme Court has delivered a judgment, it cannot be overturned. Such scenarios only exist in countries lacking a legal framework,” he highlighted. He affirmed that the rulings provided by the judiciary serve as correct determinations regarding the law in Sri Lanka and that the government will abide by the Supreme Court's conclusions.
In closing, President Dissanayake reaffirmed his government’s resolve to combat large-scale financial crimes and corruption with a structured approach, stating, "If we conduct investigations properly, there won’t be anyone left unaccountable. We will enforce laws rigorously against fraud and corruption and ensure punishments for wrongdoers. This task will be executed with utmost precision."

ReplyDeleteIn my view, the NPP government is devoting too much energy to pursuing former opposition politicians and making political statements aimed at strengthening its prospects at the next general election. Investigating corruption is necessary, but the government should place greater emphasis on delivering the system change it promised.
ReplyDeleteMeaningful change requires stronger institutions, transparent decision-making and accountability for everyone, including those in power. These reforms would help prevent corruption and establish good governance, benefiting both present and future generations of Sri Lankans.
