Former President Shiranthi Rajapaksa Transferred to Private Hospital for Further Treatment
The Colombo National Hospital has confirmed that former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, who has been receiving treatment as an inmate, has been transferred to Nawaloka Private Hospital for further medical investigations and treatment.
This transfer followed expert medical recommendations from specialists after she received treatment at the National Hospital.
Shiranthi Rajapaksa was detained on October 7 in connection with allegations of financial misconduct involving a sum of Rs. 10 million belonging to the National Savings Bank. These funds were reportedly transferred to a bank account associated with the "Sirilaya Saviya" organization under questionable circumstances, leading to investigations by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
During her time at the Welikada prison, she experienced a sudden health crisis, prompting the authorities to transfer her to the coronary unit of the Colombo National Hospital for inpatient care upon medical advice.
On October 16, during a court hearing before Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama, a special medical report presented by the hospital's director indicated that she required an urgent bypass surgery due to a blockage in her coronary artery.
Considering the seriousness of her health condition, the magistrate ordered her release on a bail of Rs. 100,000 and two surety bonds of Rs. 1 million, along with a travel ban.
After the bail was granted, Rajapaksa remained at the National Hospital before being admitted to the private facility for further treatment, as decided by her family and medical team.
